The Most Common Mental Health Issues and How to Deal with Them

Mental health issues are more common than many people realize. In fact, according to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, 1 in 5 adults in the U.S. experiences mental illness in any given year. There are a variety of different mental health issues that people can experience, and each one can present its own challenges. However, there are some mental health issues that are more common than others. The most common mental health issues include.

1. Anxiety Disorders

Anxiety disorders are the most common type of mental health disorder, affecting 40 million adults in the United States, according to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America. There are a variety of different types of anxiety disorders, including generalized anxiety disorder, social anxiety disorder, and panic disorder. We spoke with people from Damore Mental Health and they stated that anxiety can manifest itself in a number of different ways, including feeling tense or nervous, having difficulty sleeping, and sweating or having a racing heart. Symptoms of anxiety disorders can include persistent and intrusive worry, avoidance of certain situations or activities, and physical symptoms such as sweating and racing heart.

2. Mood Disorders

Mood disorders, such as depression and bipolar disorder, are another common type of mental health issue. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, 16.1 million adults in the United States have experienced at least one major depressive episode in their lifetime. Mood disorders can cause a variety of symptoms, including feelings of sadness, emptiness, or irritability; sleep problems; fatigue; and difficulty concentrating. Additionally, people with bipolar disorder may experience periods of mania, during which they may feel excessively happy or irritable, have racing thoughts, and engage in risky behaviors. It’s important to seek help if you’re experiencing any of these symptoms, as they can significantly interfere with your ability to function in daily life. This is something that a lot of people don’t realize.

3. Substance Abuse Disorders

Substance abuse disorders, such as alcoholism and drug addiction, are another common type of mental health issue. According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, about 20 million people in the United States suffer from a substance abuse disorder. Substance abuse disorders can cause a variety of problems, including relationship difficulties, job loss, financial problems, and legal issues. Additionally, substance abuse can lead to health problems such as liver disease, heart disease, and cancer. If you or someone you know is struggling with a substance abuse problem, it’s important to seek help as soon as possible. Also, keep in mind that many people who suffer from substance abuse disorders also have other mental health disorders, such as anxiety or depression.

4. Eating Disorders

Eating disorders are another common type of mental health issue. According to the National Eating Disorders Association, about 30 million people in the United States suffer from an eating disorder. Eating disorders can cause a variety of physical and mental health problems, including weight loss or gain, malnutrition, and anxiety. Additionally, eating disorders can lead to serious health problems such as heart disease, kidney failure, and gastrointestinal problems. 5. Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)

Attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a mental health issue that affects about 8 million adults in the United States, according to the National Institute of Mental Health. ADHD can cause a variety of symptoms, including difficulty paying attention, impulsivity, and hyperactivity. Additionally, people with ADHD may struggle with academic or work performance, social skills, and relationships. If you or someone you know is struggling with ADHD, it’s important to seek help from a mental health professional. This disorder is treatable with medication, psychotherapy, and/or behavior therapy. 6. Depression

Depression is a mental health disorder that causes a persistent feeling of sadness and loss of interest. It affects how you feel, think, and behave and can lead to a variety of emotional and physical problems. Depression can cause you to lose interest in activities you once enjoyed, feel hopeless, have low self-esteem, or experience changes in your eating and sleeping habits. Additionally, depression can lead to physical problems such as fatigue, headaches, or digestive issues. This disorder is treatable with medication, psychotherapy, and/or behavior therapy. It’s important to remember that you are not alone and there is help available.
